Tom Clancy's The Division is the work of the Swedish studio, Massive Entertainment, renowned for productions such as Ground Control (2000) and World in Conflict (2007). The game combines elements of role-playing online games, action, and shooting with a third person perspective (TPP) view.

The plot of Tom Clancy's The Division is set in the near future. As a result of terrorist activities, dollars bills are contaminated with a deadly virus. Soon , the New York pandemic breaks out, with which even federal authorities are unable to cope. Residents panic. Frightened people are able to do anything to survive. Members of the eponymous secret agency are trying to stop the chaos.

The gameplay is focused on multiplayer cooperation. The players assume the roles of agents and attempt to resolve the situation in the ruined city. The game has an open world which allows, inter alia, to freely explore the extensive area and take on many side quests. Combat is a significant element of the game and its mechanics are very similar to those known from the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series (e.g. hiding behind shields and leaning out of cover to shot at the enemy).

Tom Clancy's The Division is powered by Snowdrop engine. It allows to take full advantage of the technical capabilities eighth-generation consoles (Xbox and PlayStation One 4) and offers support for expanded social features (e.g. communication with friends) and the option to interact with a dedicated smartphone app.
